Particularly in children with hearing aids (HAs), the combined application might offer new insights into the neural mechanism of SIN perception in simulated real-life acoustic scenarios. Here, we present first pilot data from six children with normal hearing (NH) and three children with bilateral HAs to explore the potential applicability of this novel approach. Children with NH received a speech recognition benefit from low room reverberation and target-distractors’ spatial separation, particularly when the pitch of the target and the distractors was similar. On the neural level, the left inferior frontal gyrus appeared to support SIN comprehension during effortful listening. Children with HAs showed decreased SIN perception across conditions. The VAE-fNIRS approach is critically compared to traditional SIN assessments. Although the current study shows that feasibility still needs to be improved, the combined application potentially offers a promising tool to investigate novel research questions in simulated real-life listening. Future modified VAE-fNIRS applications are warranted to replicate the current findings and to validate its application in research and clinical settings.A 25-year-old man was admitted to our institution for remission induction therapy to treat a 12-year condition of ulcerative colitis (UC). Previously, he was treated with drugs, such as mesalamine, immunomodulators, prednisolone (PSL), and anti-TNFα anti-body, but remission was not maintained. Therefore, we started remission induction therapy with 20 mg/day of tofacitinib (TOF) to inhibit the action of Janus kinase. On the 29th day after TOF administration, he developed a lung abscess with high fever. A chronic bulla was already present in his lung; therefore, the lung abscess was likely formed due to a combination of the bulla being present and the pharmacological effects of TOF. Our report is significant as it highlights the compounding association between TOF and PSL therapy and bulla presence with the rare adverse effect of developing an abscess.Non-diazotrophic cyanobacteria are unable to fix atmospheric nitrogen and rely on combined nitrogen for growth and development. As heavy metals are ubiquitous in the cyanobacterial biosphere, their influence on the vegetative growth of cyanobacterial cells has been extensively studied. However, the effect of heavy metal stress on chlorotic cyanobacterial cells remains elusive. To simulate the natural conditions, we investigated the effects of long-term exposure of S. PKR-IN-C16 molecular weight elongatus PCC 7942 cells to both heavy metal stress and nitrogen starvation. We were able to show that elevated heavy metal concentrations, especially for Ni2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+, are highly toxic to nitrogen starved cells. In particular, cells exposed to elevated concentrations of Cd2+ or Ni2+ were not able to properly enter chlorosis as they failed to degrade phycobiliproteins and chlorophyll a and remained greenish. In resuscitation assays, these cells were unable to recover from the simultaneous nitrogen starvation and Cd2+ or Ni2+ stress. The elevated toxicity of Cd2+ or Ni2+ presumably occurs due to their interference with the onset of chlorosis in nitrogen-starved cells, eventually leading to cell death.Non-invasive healthcare technologies are an important part of research and development nowadays due to the low cost and convenience offered to both healthcare receivers and providers. This work overviews the recent advances in the field of non-invasive electrochemical biosensors operating in secreted human physiological fluids, viz. tears, sweat, saliva, and urine. Described electrochemical devices are based on different electrochemical techniques, viz. amperometry, coulometry, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy. Challenges that confront researchers in this exciting area and key requirements for biodevices are discussed. It is concluded that the field of non-invasive sensing of biomarkers in bodily fluid is highly convoluted. Nonetheless, if the drawbacks are appropriately addressed, and the pitfalls are adroitly circumvented, the approach will most certainly disrupt current clinical and self-monitoring practices.

    The administration of several classes of drugs can lead to the onset of gingival overgrowth anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, and calcium channel blockers. Among the anticonvulsants, the main drug associated with gingival overgrowth is diphenylhydantoin.

    In this study, we compared the effects of diphenylhydantoin and gabapentin on 57 genes belonging to the “Extracellular Matrix and Adhesion Molecule” pathway, present in human fibroblasts of healthy volunteers.

    Both molecules induce the same gene expression profile in fibroblasts as well as a significant upregulation of genes involved in extracellular matrix deposition like COL4A1, ITGA7, and LAMB3. The two treatments also induced a significant downregulation of genes involved in the expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteases like MMP11, MMP15, MMP16, MMP24, and transmembrane receptor ITGB4.

    Data recorded in our study confirmed the hypothesis of a direct action of these drugs at the periodontium level, inducing an increase in matrix production, a reduction in its degradation, and consequently resulting in gingival hyperplasia.
