In this paper, we present an investigation of different artefact removal methods for ultra-wideband Microwave Imaging (MWI) to evaluate and quantify current methods in a real environment through measurements using an MWI device. The MWI device measures the scattered signals in a multi-bistatic fashion and employs an imaging procedure based on Huygens principle. Amenamevir order A simple two-layered phantom mimicking human head tissue is realised, applying a cylindrically shaped inclusion to emulate brain haemorrhage. Detection has been successfully achieved using the superimposition of five transmitter triplet positions, after applying different artefact removal methods, with the inclusion positioned at 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270°. The different artifact removal methods have been proposed for comparison to improve the stroke detection process. To provide a valid comparison between these methods, image quantification metrics are presented. An “ideal/reference” image is used to compare the artefact removal methods. Moreover, the quantification of artefact removal procedures through measurements using MWI device is performed.Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of liver cancer. Our recent studies have shown that the diamine-(PEG)ylated oleanolic acid (OADP) has strong anti-tumor effects in HCCs. In this study, we evaluated the anti-tumor mechanisms of OADP in the HepG2 HCC cell line. The cytotoxicity results showed that HepG2 cell viability was markedly reduced, with a very low 50% of cell growth inhibitory concentration (IC50, 0.14 µg/mL). We then investigated the anti-tumor mechanisms of OADP in HepG2 cells. The flow-cytometry analysis was used to evaluate cell apoptosis, indicating that 74-95% of cells were apoptotic. OADP caused cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase and the loss of the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Western blot analysis was performed to assess the expression levels of key proteins associated with the underlying molecular mechanism. The results showed the clear upregulation of caspase-8, caspase-9, caspase-3, Bak, p21, and p53, accompanied by the downregulation of Bcl-2. Similar results were obtained by the cotreatment with OADP and the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) inhibitor SP600125. Agents such as OADP, which are capable of activating extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways, may represent potential HCC cancer therapies.Over the past four decades, Lyme disease has remained a virulent and pervasive illness, persisting throughout North America and many other regions of the world. Recent increases in illness in many countries has sparked a renewed interest in improved Lyme diagnostics. While current standards of diagnosis are acceptable for the late stages of the disease, it remains difficult to accurately diagnose early forms of the illness. In addition, current diagnostic methods tend to be relatively expensive and require a large degree of laboratory-based analysis. Biosensors represent the fusion of biological materials with chemical techniques to provide simple, inexpensive alternatives to traditional diagnostic methods. Lyme disease biosensors have the potential to better diagnose early stages of the illness and provide possible patients with an inexpensive, commercially available test. This review examines the current state of Lyme disease biosensing, with a focus on previous biosensor development and essential future considerations.[…].Technological advances are changing every aspect of our lives, from the way we work, to how we learn and communicate. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have seen an increased interest due to the potential of ensuring a safer environment for all road users. This study investigates the use of a smartphone-based ADAS in terms of driving performance and driver acceptance, with the aim of improving road safety. The mobile application uses both cameras of a smartphone to monitor the traffic scene and the driver’s head orientation, and offers an intuitive user interface that can display information in a standard mode or in augmented reality (AR). A real traffic experiment consisting of two driving conditions (a baseline scenario and an ADAS scenario), was conducted in Brasov, Romania. Objective and subjective data were recorded from twenty-four participants with a valid driver’s license. Results showed that the use of the ADAS influences the driving performance, as most of them adopted an increased time headway and lower mean speeds. The technology acceptance model (TAM) questionnaire was used to assess the users’ acceptance of the proposed driver assistance system. The results showed significant interrelations between acceptance factors, while the hierarchical regression analysis indicates that the variance of behavioral intention (BI) can be predicted by attitude toward behavior.Owing to its ease of application, noninvasive nature, and safety, echocardiography is an essential imaging modality to assess cardiac function in patients affected by ischemic heart disease (IHD). Over the past few decades, we have witnessed a continuous series of evolutions in the ultrasound field that have led to the introduction of innovative echocardiographic modalities which allowed to better understand the morphofunctional abnormalities occurring in cardiovascular diseases. This article offers an overview of some of the newest echocardiographic modalities and their promising application in IHD diagnosis, risk stratification, management, and monitoring after cardiac rehabilitation.Melatonin “N-Acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine” (MT) has recently been considered as a new plant growth regulator with multiple physiological functions. Although many previous studies have confirmed that exogenous applied-MT can alleviate the deleterious effects of drought stress in many plant species, most of these studies were exclusive on seeds, seedlings, and young plants for a short period of their life cycles. Therefore, the knowledge of using MT as a potential promising agricultural foliar application to improve crop productivity and quality is still insufficient under adverse open field conditions. In this study, we investigated the effect of MT as a foliar application at 0, 20, and 40 ppm on tomato plants that were grown in the open field under the long term of optimal and deficit irrigation conditions. The results indicated that exogenous MT significantly enhanced plant growth, chlorophyll and activities of antioxidant enzymes, including ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POX). This improvement was associated with a marked reduction in proline and soluble sugars.
